New 2023 Spring Anime Recos from a Shoujo Fan
A new year brings a new Spring Anime season
A new year brings a new Spring Anime season and I can’t stress enough how BOMBASTIC this year will be for anime if we can keep up the momentum from the 2023 Winter season that brought us:
A true shoujo experience in Sugar Apple Fairy Tale (Just let the girl make pastries!)
Wartime trauma in Vinland Saga season 2 (Muscles and farming, woohoo!)
And of course, Tokyo Revengers: Christmas Showdown (Don’t let the title fool you, there was DRAMA!)
For me, I’m excited to see some new female-centered stories this season more than anything. So let’s dive in on some great shows I’m excited about this season:
My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999
Why yes, a college student finding love again after heartbreak with a gamer guy does sound oddly familiar. Because it is TOO REAL!
Hear me out, this romance anime not only tackles the joy of finding inner qualities in your partner that you adore (despite their intense hobbies), it also has some petty revenge from our main girl Akane. I’m here for petty revenge any day!
Yamada-kun at Lv999 is my current feel-good show of the season and I’m excited to watch this relationship develop. While only 3 episodes are out so far, I have high hopes this relationship will provide all of the relatable good-feels.
Oshi No Ko
Because of it’s mystery-box nature I’m steering away from giving away ANYTHING about the plot for this blockbuster anime. The best way to go into Oshi No Ko is 100% blind, but since you’re here, I’ll give you a taste:
You’ve got an idol-obsessed gynecologist in the mountains
A pop idol who’s hiding a BIG secret
And a highly accurate view on the entertainment industry, complete with behind-the-scenes factoids, and how unfair the industry truly is.
The 120-minute first episode plays more like a movie than any show I’ve seen, and it’s an amazing way to kick off an exciting murder mystery. Oh yeah true crime fans, there’s murder too!
Magical Destroyers
You know I like my magical girls, but even more fun is watching the government of Japan systematically tear down my favorite anime merch hotspots of Japan and BAN ANIME.
Yep, Magical Destroyers is a high-concept show about magical girls fighting in an anti-government resistance against a regime that captures and imprisons anime fans simply for liking anime.
The staff behind this show comes from extremely highly-acclaimed action shows like Fire Force, and modern classics such as Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Gurren Lagann. The A-tier talent here is best evident in the magical girl attacks, which are animated with nuclear explosivity. Food for my soul.
