Spring Reset: Organizational Gadgets That Will Heal Your Spirit
You're likely not Marie Kondo but with these little gadgets, you can cosplay.
It’s officially springtime!
Now’s the time to dust ourselves (and our homes) off and embrace a fresh start. This might sound like a daunting and stressful task to accomplish– we’re not all build from the same hyper-organized and zen superhero material that Marie Kondo is, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take some inspiration. Organizing is the spice of a healthy life! Cleanliness is godliness!
Here are the products that have taken my home organization to the next level:
Nespresso Organizers
I thought that when I bought a $250 coffee maker I would immediately have an elevated coffee experience. That was almost true. I didn’t anticipate figuring out the pods' storage space. I live in a studio apartment with a smaller-than-average kitchen and I reallllllly wanted to avoid dedicating any counter space to some kind of garish coffee pod tree. I didn’t even think of other space-saving alternatives for them so I just kept them in their cardboard sleeves in my cabinets. I know, first-world problem, but I felt like I wasn’t doing it right. Eventually, it dawned on me– there’s probably something I can use to store them magnetically on my refrigerator. Not only was I right, but it’s the perfect minimalist solution to an otherwise annoying cluster of shit to look at. I like the way the pods look when they hang on my fridge, like metallic little buttons of all different colors. The one I got from Amazon was about $15 and it’s truly worth every penny. I’m even thinking about getting another so that I’d be able to restock less frequently.
Chord Organizers
I’m a music and video producer and I have the most obnoxious amount of chords coming out of my computer at all times. If you’re like me, you don’t feel your house is clean until your chords are wrangled and neat. Depending on what project I’m working on at a given time, having a multitude of chords among my space is an inevitability, but I recently found a way to tidy everything up and keep the receiving ends quickly accessible instead of storing them away every time I shut down my computer. This chord corral from Shein sits right on the edge of my desk allows me to snap chords right into it, keeping everything central and out of the way until I need to use them. You can find many versions of them for under $5.
Rolling Slim Laundry Baskets
Laundry for me is an issue, to say the least. I live on the 17th floor of an apartment building whose elevators take an eternity to reach my floor and back down, which is a problem when the laundry room is on the ground floor. It takes me so long to do laundry that it gives me visceral anxiety to even attempt it. I know, I should grow up. Whatever. You can write an article about how easy and fun it is to do laundry but this is my article and I’m telling you that this laundry basket is the one thing that makes the endeavor reasonably possible for me again. You may notice that it’s quite short and narrow. That is true. My strategy is that I bought 4 and when they’re all full, instead of taking them all down and doing ten years worth of laundry, I’m able to do a small load of essentials that won’t take forever to wash and dry. Those old machines are killer. City folks– I’m sure you can empathize. Before this I would literally wear all my bathing suits as bras and underwear until I literally had no choice but to do laundry once and for all. Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s mental illness. Anyway, these are about $20 each but I’m in love with them. Oh- and they have wheels!
