Fresh lineups are found in the greatest city in the world
Comedy shows are often the go-to entertainment solution for New Yorkers looking for an inexpensive and unforgettable evening. No matter where you look, you can almost always find a show to duck into; I’ve often stumbled upon them by (happy) accident. Whether the lineup comprises industry staples and regulars, or ten open-micers doing the first spots, you will likely have a memorable experience; and I’m happy to inform you that we are in the midst of a standup comedy renaissance.
During the pandemic, some critics expected to see a dramatic drop in standup comedy shows and the rate of those who begin the journey as standup comics themselves. As a comic, I watched this proven emphatically false. In fact, during the months when public gatherings of any kind were effectively illegal, I noticed a wild uptick in *secret* shows that were invite-only, privately operated by bar and club owners who weren’t ready to let go of their weekly hangs. Admittedly, I participated. The most attractive part of this comedy renaissance was the willingness of space-owners to host shows that were more on the alternative or unconventional side. With this increased enthusiasm, a more diverse wave of comedians were given rare opportunities to circumvent the politics they’ve battled for years and produce shows featuring the faces you don’t always get to see (female, people of color, LGBTQ ... you get the picture.)
Regardless, comedy truly is a bug you can’t kill.
Now that the days of partitioned restaurant tables and bars covered in so much plastic that they resembled fish tanks are (seemingly) gone, the secret shows have turned into permanent staples in the community. A night of hilarious stand-up comedy featuring a diverse lineup of the most talented women and LGBTQ comedians in New York City.
The titular gay hosts, Ryan Curcie and Carson Mlnarik (MTV, Logo), began producing “2 Gays, 1 Mic” as a comedy open-mic in Bushwick during the summer of 2021. The duo is thrilled for audiences to experience their favorite up-and-coming and established comics of the New York City comedy scene.
