Embrace Your Sexy

The journey to embracing your sexy can be a revealing, healing, and deeply personal one. Liberating for some and for a lot of us a lesson in confidence. But black women have conceptions of beauty that are not tied to our looks and not our genes. They include style, grooming, how you present and carry yourself, and “how you put yourself together, which generally speaks to the fact that we have a much broader and deeper conception of beauty. As women of color, we are often judged harshly and expected to fit into roles that people have placed on us. no matter what mainstream culture has to say about it.

In addition to constantly being pitted against one another, Black women are told that we are too loud, too bold, and "too much". That we can't be both smart and sexy, caretakers and breadwinners, confident, and outspoken. In actuality, we can embody all of those qualities and more! We get to define ourselves for ourselves and don't have to fall victim to the world's unrealistic expectations of us. A lesson that recording artist Chloe Bailey is learning in her early twenties. While it's been a triumphant year for the 23-year-old, she has also faced backlash for choosing to embrace her naturally curvy body. Like many Black women, Chloe has been judged and over sexualized for her appearance. Since creating her personal Instagram @chloebailey, she's received criticism for being "too sexy" and "portraying herself as a sexual object". Some of these same claims have persisted as she's gained more popularity, but the truth is she is just a young woman who is stepping into her power and owning her sensuality.
