2023 Comics to Watch: A Closer Look
Variety has just dropped their teaser list of the 10 Comics to Watch for 2023.
These comics will be featured in Variety’s July 19th issue and they’ll be celebrated at this year’s Just For Laughs Comedy Festival.
The list features six talented female/ non-binary comedy rising stars. Variety only gave us a sneak peak, so we did our own research.

Hannah Berner became a comedy sensation through her instagram reels and viral tweets, and she’s amassed 3.5 million followers! Hannah performs standup in NYC and at clubs/ theaters all over. She’s known for her Han on the Street segments, which feature hilarious interviews with strangers on topics like, ‘is it true men are scared of funny women?’ or ‘can men and women really be friends?’ She also has two podcasts- Giggly Squad and Burning in Hell.

Zarna Garg is an Indian-American comedian who delights audiences with her clean, family friendly material about American culture, marriage, and being a nontraditional Indian mom . She was the winner of Kevin Hart’s Comedy competition “Lyft Comics’ and the 2021 ‘Ladies of Laughter’ Newcomer award, and she has over 100 million views on TikTok. She’s a regular at the Comedy Cellar and Caroline’s in New York City and just released her first comedy special on amazon, One in a Billion. She’ll be making multiple appearances at JFL this July!

Joanne McNally is known for her unique take on the world- She tackles topics like aging in your 30s, battling an eating disorder, and dating. She’s taken over the comedy scene in Ireland and the UK. Her one woman show Bite Me was nominated for multiple awards. Her standup shows ‘Wine Tamer’ and “Prosecco Express' consistently sell out. She also co-hosts the podcast My Therapist Ghosted Me.

Leanne Morgan is the southern aunt you wish you had- an iconic sassy truth teller who shares hilarious stories about husbands, kids, and becoming an empty nester. Her comedy brings women in all ages together- mothers, grandmothers, granddaughters. Leanne Morgan just released her Netflix Special- I’m Every Woman and tours all over the country.

Sarah Sherman is a comedian, actress and screenwriter who recently completed her second season of Saturday Night Live. She’s a wild card whose comedy is absurd, physical and known for elements of ‘body horror.’ She is featured in Adam Sandler’s upcoming film- “You are So Not Invited to my Bar Mitzvah.’

Sabrina Wu
From: Ann Arbor, Michigan
Fun Fact: Graduated from Harvard University
TV/ Film: Joy Ride, writer for Doogie Kameāloha, M.D
Sabrina Wu combines their talents of beat boxing and hip hop dance to tell the story of their experience growing up asian american, coming out to family members, and their perception of success. They’re a Brooklyn-based comedian, writer, and actor who performs all over New York City, including venues like Union Hall and Bellhouse.
