Things I Learned in my 20s
Identity, Career, Mental Health & Love
My 20s were nothing but chaotic, stressful, and overall difficult. I remember being so hard on myself. I felt like no matter how much I tried to find my path, I was always lost. I struggled with my identity, sexual orientation, career goals, and of course, my looks. Social media was growing rapidly during this time, and watching other people my age "succeed" made me feel like I was out of time and that it was always too late for me to achieve anything in life. Today I'm 32, and I can safely say that IT GETS BETTER! And I wouldn't change anything about my 20s because those problematic years and experiences taught me valuable lessons I can now use.
I'm dedicating this article to all the 20-year-olds struggling to see the light at the end of the tunnel. So here is a list of the most important things I learned:
Identity:
The mistake I made while trying to find my identity was letting other people and society define it. Identity is a complex and ever-evolving concept that you will continue to explore and refine as you go through life. Staying close to the things that are important to you, including your culture, beliefs, values, and interests, is the key to defending an identity that is authentic to you.
Career:
Refrain from comparing yourself to other people. Everyone has a different story, different opportunities, and skills. Focus on your path and embrace change and uncertainty. It's important to be flexible and open to new opportunities. As you progress in your career, you may find that your goals change or that you need to adjust your life plans; being open to new opportunities can help you stay on track and reach your goals.
Mental Health and Love:
Social Media is NOT real! Focus on your process, and don't compare yourself with others. Mental health is a lifelong journey, and taking the time to reflect and focus on your journey is essential. I also discovered the value of self-love, the power of letting go of unhealthy relationships, and the importance of building healthy boundaries. Always remember that the most important relationship is the one with yourself.
Overall, I learned that life is a constant learning, growth, and exploration journey. And the most important advice I can give all of that 20 year old struggling today is to enjoy every moment! Fall in love, travel, try new hobbies, spend time with your friends, and keep learning because you'll never get those years back.
